[An English translation comes after the Korean version]부르심의 의미.jpg

God’s grace is overflowing.

Insights that I could never have imagined on my own continue to come to me. Most of them have to do with calling—with the direction and value of my life. It is truly an astonishing grace.

I never imagined that God’s calling meant something like this. And yet, in truth, I could already have known it well enough through Jesus. Just as a person can see only what he is able to see, I think the same is true of spiritual things. Until I had grown into a vessel capable of receiving it, I could not understand what was contained within that vessel.

Philippians chapter 2 verses 5–8 tells us how Jesus humbled Himself and became obedient. In a word, He humbled Himself to the point of obedience unto death. Jesus knew His way within the Father’s will, and He walked that way in obedience all the way to death.

The words “to the point of death” are the key.

To me, they carry two meanings. One is literally, “until His life came to an end.” The other is, “spending all energy of His life sparing nothing.”

I think this is what calling means for those who live in Christ: to humble ourselves and obey the will of God with everything in us, all the way to the end of our lives, and finally, if God so wills, to lay down even our lives for His will.

A Realization That Came Late

I have preached on this meaning a couple of times before. And yet, even while preaching it, I never realized that this was the very meaning of calling that I myself had to accept.

Now I understand.

If I say that I will accept God’s calling, then I must humble myself, obey His will with everything in me until the day I die, and in the end be willing to entrust even my life to God for the sake of His will.

Then what place do riches and honor have in such a life of calling? How could pursuing wealth and status possibly fit with it? How could the pursuit of comfort belong alongside such a calling?

When I realized this, the first feeling that came to me was not delight or joy, but bewilderment.

“Is this what the calling I chose really means?”

But the joy of understanding soon causes that bewilderment to fade.

The Glory of Calling

Because I know that if someone as unworthy and deeply flawed as I am could live in such a way and come to the end of my life in such a way, there would be no glory in this world that could compare with it.

I mean the glory that the Lord will share with those who follow Him.

Only now do I think I understand, at least a little.

Calling is not an invitation to be lifted up. It is an invitation to humble myself and submit to the will of God.

It is a road to be walked with everything I have, all the way until death. And ultimately, it is the road of entrusting even my life itself to God. But this is not a road of despair.

For those who suffer with Christ have been promised that they will also be glorified with Christ.

“And if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us” Romans chapter 8 verses 17–18.
